Why a draft is the right way to decide on forever
A permanent tattoo asks you to predict who you will be. A draft lets you find out first.
Every permanent tattoo begins as a guess. You choose a symbol, a word, a line of fine text — and you choose it for a person who does not exist yet: you, ten years older, with different work, different wrists, a different idea of what matters. Some guesses turn out to be the best decisions of a lifetime. Others sit under shirt sleeves, quietly waiting to be lasered.
The prediction problem
Permanence asks you to answer a hard question on the first day: is this really me? Most of us have never lived with a design long enough to know. We know what looks good in a photo. We do not yet know what looks good when we wake up to it, sweat through a summer with it, or button a shirt cuff over it.
Two weeks changes your mind
Wear a design for fourteen days and the picture gets honest. You find out whether you keep turning your forearm over to look at it — or stop noticing it by day four. You learn how it sits against your clothes, whether you angle it toward mirrors, whether it still feels like yours at a family dinner. Some drafts you take off and never think about again. Others you are genuinely sad to see fade. Both answers are useful.
A draft is not a smaller commitment. It is information.
Placement is discovered, not chosen
The other thing two weeks teaches you is where. The rose you planned for your inner arm may feel invisible there and electric on your shoulder. Placement is not a design decision you make on paper — it is something your body tells you over time, if you give it the chance.
From draft to commitment
When a design keeps calling you back, you will know it — and by then you will have something better than an idea. Photograph the developed ink on your skin, in real light, worn for real weeks. That photograph is the most honest reference sheet a tattoo artist will ever receive. Bring it to them, and the permanent version starts from evidence instead of a guess.
